Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (CCIP)

The course and assessment center will be useful for new and experienced health care professionals involved with clinical education. While the information presented covers the basic skills for clinical instructors, the interactive tasks and large and small group discussions will be of benefit even to experienced clinical educators. Members of professions other than PT who attend will receive a certificate of completion, but may not complete the assessment center or receive the credential.

Course Description

This program is recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) as a Clinical Instructor (CI) Education and Credentialing Program. The program was developed through a grant funded by APTA. The program addresses issues of planning and preparing for students from the health care disciplines during their clinical education experiences; developing learning experiences and supporting ongoing learning through questioning and effective feedback. Skills of evaluation are discussed, as well as the identification and management of students with exceptional situations. The program closes with a brief look at legal implications for clinical educators, including issues presented by ADA legislation.

The “Assessment Center” provides each participant with the opportunity to apply information from the program in simulated situations. Successful completion of each station in the Assessment Center results in the awarding of APTA’s CI Credential. The six assessment center stations are integrated into the program schedule.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify roles and responsibilities of CI’s
  • Assess a student's readiness to learn
  • Plan clinical learning experiences
  • Evaluate student performance
  • Demonstrate skills to manage the exceptional student
  • Discuss legal issues in clinical education


Georgeanne Vlad, PT, MA is a graduate of Children’s Hospital Physical Therapy School and UCSB with a MA in Ergonomics. She has worked in academia for over 25 years on faculty at USC and Western University of Health Sciences teaching Ethics and Psychosocial Aspects of Healthcare. Georgeanne has served in the Assembly of Representatives for San Gabriel Valley for numerous years along with serving on Nominating Committee. She also serves on CPTA’s Ethics committee and has presented at numerous Chapter Ethics Forums.


Gina Maria Musolino, PT, MSEd, EdD was recently appointed Associate Professor and Coordinator Clinical Education for the University of South Florida, USF Health, Morsani College of Medicine, School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences, Tampa, FL. Previously, she was Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Education for The University of Utah, College of Health, Department of Physical Therapy. Dr. Musolino has served as former Vice-Chair of the Southwest District of FPTA (1998-2000); FPTA Research Committee (2000-2001); APTA Annual Conference Program Committee (2003-2006), Chairperson (2006); APTA Education SIG Nominating Committee Member (2003-2005); Chairperson, Northwest Intermountain Consortium of Clinical Educators (2006-2008); APTA Education Section, Promotion Representative-at-Large (2006-2010) and APTA Awards Committee, Subcommittee on Education (2009-2013). Gina previously served on the Education Section Subcommittee for the APTA Annual Conference Program Review Committee from 1999-2003; and serving for Screening of Abstracts for ACPC 2010.

Target Audience

PTs and PTAs who work with students or foreign trained licensed applicants. Instructional Level is Basic-Intermediate.
