Course Description

Two concurrent Sessions to Choose From:

Are You Pushing Your Aging Patients Hard Enough?*

Speakers: Marilyn Moffat PT, DPT, PhD, DSc (hon), GCS, CSCS, CEEAA, FAPTA and Karen Kemmis PT, DPT, MS, GCS, CDE, CEEAA

This two-day course will encompass didactic and laboratory sessions to enhance knowledge and skill in the optimum management of aging adults. The number of aging adults with impairments, functional limitations, participation restrictions, and disability will affect physical therapist practice. Exercise is the single most effective intervention physical therapists can use to positively impact these changes. It will be imperative to maximize the results of PT interventions and capitalize upon the opportunities presented. Functional tests and measures for aging adults will be presented in the areas of aerobic capacity/endurance, anthropometric characteristics, balance, gait, mobility, muscle performance, posture, and range of motion with normative data to provide evidence-based baseline information to support interventions. The course will also provide the knowledge for scientifically prescribing safe and effective exercise of appropriate intensity for aging adults in the areas of aerobic conditioning/endurance training; balance, coordination, and agility training; posture training; flexibility training; gait and locomotion training; and muscle performance training.

Executing a Standardized Physical Therapy Wellness Exam: Reducing the risk and impact of disease across the lifespan of your patients

Speakers: Jennifer Gamboa, PT, DPT, OCS and Steven Tepper, PT, PhD This hands‐on implementation course moves beyond the conceptual phase, and gives participants a model to develop and manage programming for health, wellness, and disease reduction across the lifespan of their patients. Participants will get practical experience evaluating population and community health risk, as well as individualized wellness visit, data to develop individual, group, or outreach programming with a focus on positive return on investment. The instructors will provide practical rubber‐meets‐the‐road business practices to facilitate realistic and immediate implementation of wellness and prevention programming based on the outcomes of a standardized physical therapy wellness visit.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of Are You Pushing Your Aging Patients Hard Enough?, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the demographics related to older adult populations, including disease trends and growing disability
  • Know the anatomical and physiological changes in the aging cardiovascular/pulmonary, musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, hormonal, genito-urinary, and integumentary systems
  • Have awareness of aging characteristics
  • Analyze the functional requirements for community-living aging adults
  • Know the predictors of successful aging
  • Know the components of the physical therapist examination (history, systems review, tests & measures)
  • Know the ways of choosing the best test and measure for examination of aging adults
  • Analyze and have skill in functional tests and measures of aerobic capacity/endurance, anthropometric characteristics, balance, gait, mobility, muscle performance, posture, and range of motion
  • Understand the responses to exercise
  • Analyze the components of physical therapist exercise prescription
  • Analyze and have skill in exercise prescription for: aerobic conditioning/endurance training; balance, coordination, and agility training; posture training; flexibility training; gait and locomotion training; and muscle performance training (strength, power, endurance)

At the end of  Executing a Standardized Physical Therapy Wellness Exam: Reducing the risk and impact of disease across the lifespan of your patients, participants will be able to:

  • Participants will correctly identify the necessary elements of lifetime engagement of a client, and its importance in advancing the health and reducing disease in our population.
  • Participants will be able to analyze publicly‐available community health needs assessments and develop a proposal to design and implement responsive programming.
  • Participants will be able to synthesize and analyze individual health risk data based on a standardized wellness visit in order to develop a health fitness profile and follow up prevention program for individual clients.
  • Participants will be able to apply an evidence‐ and outcomes‐based methodology to develop wellness programs that are specific and matched to health goals.
  • Participants will be able to design progressive wellness and prevention programs that take into account health status and psychosocial drivers.
  • Participants will be able to identify the market opportunities for planning and implementing physical therapist driven wellness programming in their own market that includes analyzing return on investment and net revenue generating potential.


Marilyn Moffat PT, DPT, PhD, DSc (hon), GCS, CSCS, CEEAA, FAPTA a recognized leader in the United States and internationally, is a practitioner, a teacher, a consultant, a leader, and an author. She is a Full Professor of Physical Therapy at New York University, where she directs both the professional doctoral program (DPT) and the post-professional graduate master's degree program in pathokinesiology. She is in private practice in the New York area. Dr. Moffat is immediate Past-president of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy, and she coordinated the efforts to develop international guidelines for physical therapist educational programs and standards of physical therapy practice around the world. She has given over 800 professional presentations throughout her practice lifetime, and she has taught and provided consultation services in many areas around the globe.

Dr. Moffat completed a six-year term as the President of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) in 1997 during which time she was instrumental in the development of the “Guide to Physical Therapist Practice” and the “Normative Model for Physical Therapist Education”. She established the APTA Section on Geriatric’s Certification Program for Physical Therapists as Exercise Experts for Aging Adults and served as its first co-chair for four years.

Amongst her many publications are two books for the lay audience - American Physical Therapy Association’s Book of Body Maintenance and Repair and Age-Defying Fitness. She also completed a 4 book series known as the Musculoskeletal Essentials, Cardiovascular/Pulmonary Essentials, Neuromuscular Essentials, and Integumentary Essentials for physical therapy clinicians and students. As part of her commitment to research, Dr. Moffat has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Physical Therapy. She is also currently on the Board of Directors of the World Rehabilitation Fund and is a member of the Executive Committee.

Karen Kemmis PT, DPT, MS, GCS, CDE, CEEAA is a physical therapist, diabetes educator, and adjunct professor at the SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. She earned bachelor and doctorate degrees in physical therapy at SUNY Upstate Medical University and a master’s degree in exercise physiology from Syracuse University. She is board certified as a geriatric clinical specialist and is a certified diabetes educator. Dr. Kemmis specializes in physical therapy and exercise prescription for aging adults, those with osteoporosis, diabetes, painful orthopedic conditions, and balance dysfunction. She lectures nationally and internationally on the topics of diabetes, osteoporosis, and exercise for aging adults. She was a founding co-chair and instructor for the Certification as Exercise Experts for Aging Adults program for the American Physical Therapy Association’s Section on Geriatrics. Dr. Kemmis was a Director and Treasurer for the American Association of Diabetes Educator’s (AADE) Board of Directors. She is a frequent resource and contributor for the National Osteoporosis Foundation and a spokesperson for AADE. She has authored chapters on the aging musculoskeletal system and physical therapy for osteoporosis and serves as a reviewer for several journals.

Jennifer Gamboa, PT, DPT is founder and CEO of Body Dynamics, Inc – Center for Sustainable Health in Falls Church, VA. BDI provides integrated, collaborative care to restore, maintain, and enhance physical well‐being through the use of integrated plans of care that may include physical therapy, massage, fitness physicals and exercise prescription, counseling , personal training and group fitness and sports enhancement classes. Dr. Gamboa has been practicing for 20 years, and is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist with advanced manual therapy training. Her practice was the recipient of her community’s Best Business Award in 2006, and APTA’s Private Practice Section’s Best Practice Award in 2008. She is a Founding Circle Member of the Physical Therapy Business Alliance and serves on its Executive Board. She participated in APTA’s Strategic Thinking Initiative and served as Chairperson for APTA’s Taskforce on Vision 2020. She currently serves on APTA’s Taskforce on the Physical Therapist’s Role in Health Promotion, Prevention, and Wellness. Dr. Gamboa has developed a web‐based program, FitTEST SolutionsTM for physical therapist‐driven fitness physicals/annual PT exams, which is currently in use in practices across the country as well as multiple academic programs. She has lectured extensively on alternative practice models; fitness, wellness, and health promotion; and best practices for exercise prescription to modify disease risk.


Steven Tepper, PT, PhD has been a PT for more the 30 years and currently directs the transitional DPT program at University of Montana. He is an adjunct professor with the University of Delaware, University of Maryland, George Washington University, the Ohio State University and other programs. He is also the President of Rehab Essentials, Inc. Dr. Tepper received his BS in Physical Therapy and a PhD in Experimental Pathology from the University of Maryland. His fields of experience include an interest in endurance testing, differential diagnosis of endurance impairments, and the effects exercise training has on disease or the prevention of disease. His professional highlights include President of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section of the APTA, Task Force Member on Clinical Practice Guidelines III for the APTA, recipient of the Cardiopulmonary Sections Linda Crane Merit Award, University of Maryland Alumnus of the Year 2003, and Robert C. Bartlett Award for Innovation in Fundraising from the Foundation for Physical Therapy, 2005. Dr. Tepper has a passion for teaching and life.

Santa Barbara is a destination with a variety of boutique hotels, waterfront resorts, and private Inns, motels, and B&B accommodations. Visit for ideas and reservations. Many properties require a 2-night minimum stay over the weekend.

Participants for Are You Pushing Your Clients/Patients Hard Enough need to bring:

  • Stopwatch
  • Tape measure
  • Stethoscope
  • Sphygmomanometer
  • Exercise mat (or thick towels or blankets to use for 2nd day for exercising on the floor)
  • 1 set of hand weights for each participant (3-5 lbs recommended for women and 7-8 lbs recommended for men)
  • 3 theraband elastic bands (red, green, blue) for each participant


Exercise clothes and sneaker for both days. Please dress in layers as we will be indoors and outdoors. The weather along the coast can be cool and breezy.
